Choosing a Smaller Plant Pot: What to Consider

When shopping for small plant containers, be sure to consider the following:

  1. Small pots make drainage even more important. With less soil to disperse and absorb water, it's easy for a smaller container to get waterlogged. Make sure your pot has drainage holes — or be sure to add them — if you're not using a cachepot. You may also need a plant saucer if keeping your pot inside.
  2. Some plants grow quickly. Consider the needs of your plant. While some plants prefer to be rootbound or are happy in small planters, others will quickly outgrow them and might need a medium-size planter, instead.
  3. Small planters look great when paired with others. Whether you're putting three smaller containers together or mixing small, medium, and large, combining planter sizes can add just the right visual interest to your space.
