When to Use a Medium Size Plant Pot

Choosing the right size planter can be tricky. Though it can be obvious when you need an extra large pot (for a citrus tree or large fiddle leaf, for example) or a tiny pot (for African violets, perhaps), sometimes it's not so clear. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. How big will my plant get? Our medium size planters have a smallest dimension of 11" - 29". Consider the size of your plant now and how much its expected to grow in the next year or two to estimate what you'll need.
  2. What pot is my plant in now? Often the advice is to go no more than 2 inches bigger than your plant's current pot, but this can be dependent on type. It pays to do a little bit of research on best practices for your specific plant to see if they prefer to be root-bound or like space to grow.
  3. Where am I planning on putting this planter? What does your space look like? Will a medium-size planter seem too small or too large? Remember plant stands are always an option to help lift a planter up to better suit your space. Medium size planters also often look pleasing when grouped with larger and smaller planters.

Medium-size containers can work great next to couches or chairs, along outdoor steps, on a balcony, or in the corner of a room. Whatever you choose, there's a color, material, and style that's just right for your space.
