Buying Large Plant Pots: What to Keep in Mind

Large plant pots (and if you're really going big, huge planters) can help make a bold statement in your home, office, or on your patio. But there are some important considerations to keep in mind when purchasing bigger plant containers.

  1. Big pots can be heavy

If you're purchasing a larger planter, think through how often you'll need to move it. Choosing a light weight planter material (like fiberglass or faux concrete GFRC) helps you get the look you want without difficult maintenance.
  2. Ensure your pots have proper drainage.

Drainage is important no matter the size pot, but for larger pots, replacing water-logged soil or checking roots for rot becomes a bigger hassle. Make sure your pot has drainage holes or a self-watering system to keep your plants healthy.
  3. Some plants prefer smaller pots.

Some plants, whether house plants or outdoor flowers, prefer to be a bit rootbound. When repotting, make sure you're not going too big so your plant stays happy, and be sure to research the needs of your particular plant.
  4. Durable materials are worth the investment

Larger planters can get pricey, so choosing the right material that will last without fading or cracking — whether indoors or out — saves you from wasting money and having to repot down the road. At EPlanters, we have fiberglass, plastic, eco-friendly, and recycled materials that stand the test of time.
  5. Consider using planter fillers

Potting soil gets expensive and heavy. When you want the look of a large planter but your plant doesn't need that much root space, consider using materials like gravel or even old pool noodles to keep costs down. Check out our top tricks to fill large planters here.
