Huge Pots for Tree Planters, Patio Dividers, & More

Whether indoors or outdoors, there's nothing like extra large planters to both make a statement and turn a boring, bare space into a nature-filled oasis. Oversized planters can be used for citrus trees or to create backyard privacy with tall grasses — or to add interest to a boring wall. The possibilities are endless!

Here are a few tips to remember when shopping for the perfect big plant container for your space:

1. Know Your Plant’s Needs

Large plants in particular can have special needs. Be sure to choose a container deep enough and wide enough for your plant's root system to expand, and look for built-in drainage holes to avoid root rot. Trees in particular hate soggy roots. At ePlanters, many of our planters have the option to add drainage holes (free of charge!) if they don't already have them.

It's also important to consider weight if your plant is going to get big (like a tree or large shrub). You'll want the planter to be sturdy enough to support it, but lighter options like fiberglass can make it easier to move plant pots around when needed. For trees, you'll want a minimum depth of at least 18-24 inches and a width about twice the width of the root ball.

 2. Material Matters

When it comes to outdoor planters, fiberglass is a great option because it's lightweight and weather-resistant. Concrete can also be great for outdoor use since it's durable and stable, but it's heavy — consider faux concrete GFRC instead when you want the look of concrete without the weight.

Other materials also have their pros and cons: wood can give you a natural look, but it needs to be treated to resist rot. Ceramic or terra cotta have a nice look, but they can be fragile and heavy. In many cases, plastic planters can mimic the look you want with increased durability and lighter weight.

3. Consider Size and Scale

Extra large doesn’t just mean "big"—it should be proportionate to the space and the plant. Be sure the planter won’t block walkways or dominate a small room or patio. For large spaces, you can always group different sizes of planters together for a layered look.
