Succulent gardens

Potted succulent plants are perfect decor for a porch, patio, deck, or windowsill due to their low maintenance, sun-loving nature. Here are some tips that will help you create a gorgeous succulent container garden.

FIVE STEPS TO CREATING A SUCCULENT BOWL

STEP ONE
Fill your plant container with potting mix. You can purchase a special mix made specifically for succulents or create your own mixture of potting soil and sand.

STEP TWO
Choose a focal point for your container—typically the most colorful and/or largest succulent of the group—and place it into the center of the bowl.

FUN FACT

You can use cuttings from your succulent to grow new plants. This is known as ‘propagation.’ To propagate your succulent, simply snip off a leaf, let it dry in the sun, toss it on top of some soil, and give it the occasional light watering.

STEP THREE
Using a mix of succulents, plant the rest of the bowl. Choose plants with different textures and colors for interest. Succulents are slow-growing, so you’ll want to plant them tightly to create a lush look.

STEP FOUR
Use the leftover potting mixture to fill in any gaps left between plants. Add a layer of top dressing, such as gravel or moss, over the exposed soil mix.

STEP FIVE
Water your succulent container garden, taking care to water the soil rather than the plants themselves. Succulents are capable of storing water and prefer not to sit in soggy soil, so be careful not to overwater.
