Setting plants around your apartment is a great way to bring nature indoors, and add life to your space. However, plants that require a lot of care or frequently die due to small environmental changes may not be a great fit for an apartment. Enjoy plants that have a unique look without the high maintenance requirements. Here are 5 of our favorite low maintenance apartment plants that add a stunning element wherever they’re placed.
1. "Blue Echeveria" Succulent
Blue echiveria succulents (Echeveria glauca) are both captivating to look at, and incredibly easy to maintain. These stunning succulents originated from the desert, so they don’t need a lot of attention. For best results, place somewhere with a lot of sunlight and water infrequently. As an extra bonus, they are safe to have around cats and dogs. Your curious pet won’t be harmed even if they take a small nibble.
2. Pothos
Pothos plants (Epipremnum aureum) are one of the easiest plant to start with for beginners. With trailing leaves, this plant will gently hang down from hanging planters, climb up planter trellises, and will cascade across surfaces. This versatile plant can thrive in both high and low light environments.
Let the top few inches of soil dry out before watering to maintain adequate watering levels and prevent against root rot.
3. Areca Palm
Bring home beach vibes and some extra height with an Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens). These palms are able to grow up to 6 or 7 feet in height! If you’re looking to fill a corner or just make a dramatic statement, the Areca Palm can be the perfect addition to your living space. Place somewhere with bright, indirect light and plan on watering every other week.
4. Elephant Ear
With big, bold leaves Elephant Ear plants (Alocasia and colocasia) and its many varieties, offer a unique look to your space. Once they are established, these large-leafed plants require very little maintenance. Water infrequently, and place in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight.
5. Snake Plant
Also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, the Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) offers distinct pointed leaves with dark green markings. This plant is happy in nearly any condition. Despite neglect, this low maintenance apartment plant can thrive and will grow anywhere from 6 inches to 48 inches tall! Place in indirect light and keep its soil moderately dry for best results.
